RISE To The Challenge
A recently formed left wing alliance will hold its founding meeting in Cumbernauld next week.
RISE is committed to building support for an independent Scotland based on a sustainable, socialist economy that will end the inequality of the free market. It was officially launched at a successful event in Glasgow last month.
Local spokesperson and RISE activist Liam Stevenson commented, “The success of RISE will come from the strength of our local groups who can be involved directly in the issues that affect our community. Similarly, as an organisation committed to building from the grassroots, it is our local members who will decide our campaigning priorities at a local level and who will help shape the overall direction that RISE will take. You can be an active participant in developing a new and vibrant movement for social change in Scotland and I hope people will come along, have their say and play their part. Another Scotland is possible but it can only come through people actively striving to build it.”
The meeting is in Greenfaulds Community Centre at 7pm on Wednesday 23rd September and anyone interested is welcome to come along.

CUMBERNAULD & KILSYTH SSP NEWSLETTER – SEPTEMBER 2015
RISE Scotland’s Left Alliance
Local SSP members were well represented at the launch of RISE, the alliance of the left in Scotland that is aiming to build towards the 2016 election in Scotland to ensure that an explicitly left wing programme can be put to the electorate in Scotland next year.
We have already been involved in helping to organise local meetings in the Cumbernauld and Kilsyth area and will be doing so again this month. RISE is aiming to be participative and build from the grassroots. The positive part SSP members can play in this process will be discussed at our meeting on Thursday September 10th in The Link, Cumbernauld at 7.30pm.
Can Labour Turn Lefty Again?
Within the next few days the result of the British Labour Party leadership campaign will be known. With a real possibility that the left wing MP Jeremy Corbyn will be elected, the question remains whether this will represent a shift to the left, particularly for Labour in Scotland who recently elected the very mainstream and pro-market Kezia Dugdale to lead them.
Corbyn rejects independence for Scotland but could his election see Labour step up its left wing rhetoric to rebuild support in Scotland or has that process gone too far for people to be so easily wooed back? Similarly, if Corbyn wins will there be any real shift in Labour or will the all powerful neo-liberals keep their grip on the party? Discuss these issues with us on Thursday 24th September, again in The Link at 7.30pm.
